DAYTON - WYOMING
If you happen to find yourself driving US-14 west thru the Bighorn Mountains on your way to Yellowstone and need a place to layover Prune Creek campground would be a fitting choice in my opinion. I would even recommend it as a destination in itself as it provides so many of the benefits of mountain camping without the dusty washboard gravel road approach as the campground is adjacent to US-14.
Walking out into the woods one can get a feeling that the woods go on forever.
The campground lies in a dense stand of lodgepole pines. A big part of our camping experience is the campfire which means we are always on the hunt for "dead and down" wood. A little walk into the woods away from your campsite and there is ample amount of just that for the taking.
Campsites are plenty spacious. We are situated in one of the campsites on the east end of the campground. This picture is taken from the vantage point of the highway looking in towards the woods. Behind me is the prune creek and off to the right is the Tongue River. Camping here you will definitely heare plenty of highway traffic. There is just no way around that when the campground is so close to the highway.
This is the Prune Creek. Its the small creek that runs thru the campground right next to US-14. The large creek/river is the Tongue River and there are a couple of sites that are right next to that. If you look up to your right in this picture you will see an enbankment for the highway. Its that close. The water is still a nice feature to have but the flow will not block out the noise from the highway.
